Best Time to Visit Sardinia: A Seasonal Guide
One of the most common questions I get is: "When's the best time to visit Sardinia?"
The honest answer is: it depends entirely on what you're looking for. Below is an honest overview by season, including the downsides that most travel guides prefer not to mention.
Spring (April–June): my personal favorite
That's when the island is at its greenest, with wildflowers blooming everywhere, and temperatures ranging from 18 to 25 degrees. Perfect for hikers and nature lovers.
Benefits
Hardly any tourists, so the beaches and roads are quiet
Lower prices for accommodations
Perfect weather for hiking, especially in the mountains (Supramonte, Gennargentu)
Disadvantages
The sea is still too cold for a really nice swim (especially in April/May)
Some seasonal restaurants and beach clubs are still closed
Direct flights from the Netherlands are more limited than in the summer
Summer (July–August): the classic season
This is the Sardinia you see on Instagram: crowded beaches, temperatures up to 35 degrees, and a sea that’s finally warm enough.
Benefits
Warmest seawater of the year
Most direct flights from Amsterdam and Eindhoven
Full selection of restaurants, tours, and activities
Disadvantages
Crowds, especially on the famous beaches and in Costa Smeralda
Accommodation prices are skyrocketing
Reservations are required, including for restaurants
Fall (September–October): the quiet insider tip
Personally, I think this is one of the best times of year. The sea is still wonderfully warm—the water holds onto the summer heat for a long time—but the crowds have mostly disappeared.
Benefits
Warm seawater, quiet beaches
Lower prices than in the summer
The wine harvest and local festivals are still in full swing
Disadvantages
Starting in mid-October, some seasonal businesses begin to close
Direct flights are becoming scarcer as we approach the end of October
Chance of occasional rain showers is increasing
Winter (November–March): for true insiders
Most tourists skip this time of year entirely—and that’s exactly why I’m mentioning it. Winter in Sardinia isn’t a beach vacation, but it is a surprisingly great time for culture, gastronomy, and nature.
Benefits
An authentic, local atmosphere without any tourist crowds
Lowest prices of the year
The perfect time for foodie travelers (truffle and olive harvests, local festivals)
Disadvantages
Many coastal restaurants and accommodations are closed
There are no direct flights from the Netherlands—you'll fly via Milan or Rome
Limited selection of organized tours
My advice for each type of traveler
Are you just looking for beaches and sunshine? Go in July or August, but be sure to book well in advance.
Are you looking for peace and quiet and hot water? September is my personal recommendation.
Do you enjoy hiking and nature? April–May or October are ideal.
Curious about the local culture without the tourist crowds? You might even want to consider visiting in the winter.
My insider tip
Are you still unsure about the best time to travel?
Every season has its own charm, but also its own practical considerations—from which restaurants are open to flight schedules.
